Today, we join the nation in remembering and honoring the remarkable legacy of Former President Jimmy Carter—a man whose unwavering dedication to service inspired a nation, a faith and a way of neighborliness with work gloves on. 

President Carter’s partnership with Habitat for Humanity began nearly 40 years ago, rooted in a simple conviction: that everyone deserves a decent place to live. Alongside his wife, Rosalynn, he tirelessly championed Habitat’s mission, working hand-in-hand with volunteers to build, renovate and repair homes across the globe.

Through the "Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project," the Carters left an indelible mark, mobilizing thousands of volunteers and transforming the lives of families in need. Even as their physical work slowed with age, their commitment never wavered—serving as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the power of community.

The Community Foundation & United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties is proud to steward the legacy and continue the inspiring work President Carter accomplished through local habitat organizations. In 2024, the Flagler Habitat for Humanity Endowment Fund was created to ensure the future strength and growth of this essential work. The strong support for the fund since its inception has led to greater than 250% growth in the first year of performance – meaning more grants, more families in houses and more community needs met.
